What Does Your Energy Level Tell You About Your Job?

A lot of my conversations with clients revolve around questions of “am I in the right role?”

Often that is more about the day to day, hour to hour responsibilities than it is about the industry they are in or the title they have.

One useful signal to take into consideration is energy level. When you are working hard on one of your core responsibilities - fully focused and doing your job well - is that giving you energy? Or is that depleting your energy?

Of course there are numerous factors that go into whether a role is a good fit - but I’ve found that this energy question can offer a useful lens and open up a productive conversation about fit.

I know personally when I found coaching the energy difference was night and day compared to my previous jobs.

I used to come home from work exhausted and drained.

And yesterday I was reflecting that I had 5 straight hours of client work. That’s a lot of coaching!

When I signed off for the day I wondered if I’d have enough stamina to make it to the networking event I had on the books last night. More human connection!  More listening and giving people my undivided attention!

But after a brief break for dinner I jumped right back in. And left the networking event wondering where all the time had gone. I just get so much energy from connecting deeply with people.

It’s one of the ways I know I am in a role that is a good fit for me.
